Advantages of Traceability

For Malaysia, the implementation of an integrated approach to food information and traceability
throughout the different food sectors in the country will have the following advantages (among
  others):

A consistent approach to food traceability which will help exporters meet existing and future
demands from importing food companies and food authorities

Improved management and reduced costs in the case of incidents involving infectious or
  transferable animal diseases

Improved food safety for Malaysian consumers and a reduced risk of food safety problems
  arising in exported products

Improved information flow between all players in the food supply chain, which will lead to
greater sector efficiency as well as supporting efforts to improve food safety

Improved availability of accurate information for consumers to assist in their purchasing or
  dietary choices

Introduction for farmers and small businesses in the food sector to the use of information to
improve their operational processes and marketing

Extension of ICT technology to a sector which is among the later adopters

The creation of an ‘information hub’ around which value-added services can be provided to
farmers and others in the food industry

Greater efficiency and lower costs in inspection efforts to support food safety controls

Extension of the international image of Malaysia as an advanced country in the implementation
of new technology to traditional industries

Establishment of the international reputation of Malaysia as the source of high-quality safe food
  products

Creation of a technology and knowledge base, related to the application of ICT to the
agricultural and food industries, which can be exported to other countries
